«BARÊ GIRAN«

SYNOPSIS

Avdel feeds his family thanks to the salary he earns with Bozo, a donkey who works in the sanitation service of the city of Mardin in Turkey. Avdel also lives with his nephew Salih, who fled Syria. When the ‘old Bozo’ is retired by the municipality, he must find a younger donkey to keep his job. To help his uncle, Salih crosses the Syrian border to bring back his own donkey, which he had to leave because of the war. However, in order to accomplish this mission, he must cross the minefields.

DIRECTOR’S BIO-FILMOGRAPHY

 

Yılmaz Özdil is a Kurdish film director born in Hakkari (1979), in eastern Turkey. He did his MA in Geopolitical Border Treatment in Kurdish Cinema at the Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne University. In 2013 he defended his PhD dissertation entitled «The Visual Construction of Kurdish Identities in Cinema» at the University Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle. From 2003 to 2014, he directed several documentary films and also worked as assistant director in various Kurdish films shot in Turkey, Iraqi Kurdistan and France. He is currently working at Mardin Artuklu University as an assistant professor teaching Kurdish Cinema as well as Representation of Kurds in Cinema. Barê Giran (The Heavy Burden) is his first fiction film as a director.
